Catchy pop from Bergen
Jones Nielsen was a pleasant suprise amidst mediocre music at urørt. he was first to secure himself a place in the urørt finale this year by seducing the jury with the song “TT”, which I’ve also shared here. He has also previously been featured at urørt with his band Kakkmaddafakka.
Jonas is originally from Bergen (lives in Oslo now), a very prolific place when it comes to talented musicians. The same place that gave birth to the term “Bergen Wave” with artists such as Kings of Convenience, Röyksopp and Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herren Band.
According to Jonas himself the song is about love and is meant to make you think about the things that are important to you in life. Before he moved to Oslo the song was one of his goals. The two T’s in the song represents both his friend and musical companion Tommy and his girlfriend Tonje. Those were the people he was with the most at the time when the song was written.
The song doesn’t necessarily break any ground, but it complements playful piano driven pop music quite well. The energetic rollercoaster pacing and style makes it into a very pleasant melody alongside the ambient piano chords in between. Other noteable artists who understands this style well are B.C Camplight and Bryan Scary. I wouldn’t say he is quite up with that calibre yet. However, his promising talent shouldn’t be underestimated as I think it has the potensial to appeal internationally. The guy was just 22 when he made and released this song.
Looking back into the music you can hear some Brian Wilson references, however the influences he cited are a bit different. Instead we find musicians such as Billy Joel, Thom Hell, ABBA, Paul Simon, Davie Bowie being mentioned. Those musicians may be a lot different from Brian Wilson, but they manage to give his music and style sense. After all, they’re (except for Bowie, I’d like to imply) most of the time piano driven pop music.
This song is definitely a proof of an interesting upcoming musician. He is currently working on his first album, which doesn’t have any official date yet.
